Investing in Resilient Water and Agriculture Systems

Water is the foundation of life, essential for human health, food production, industry, transport, urban development, and the preservation of biodiversity and ecosystems. However, increasing pressures from climate change, over-extraction, and pollution are making water a scarce and critical resource worldwide. Currently, more than two billion people face water stress, and in vulnerable regions, water scarcity can escalate to crises that threaten stability and peace.

Agriculture is the largest global consumer of water and heavily relies on its availability, especially in arid and semi-arid areas. Recognizing this, many development projects supported by KfW Development Bank on behalf of the German Federal Government focus on promoting efficient irrigation techniques, enhancing drought resilience, and expanding water storage capacities. These initiatives aim to improve agricultural productivity while preserving vital water resources.

Our work highlights the important nexus between food systems, water, and biodiversity, which is crucial for ecosystem resilience and human well-being. By supporting sustainable land and water management, agroecology, and climate-resilient soils, KfW projects contribute to protecting and restoring natural ecosystems such as forests and wetlands. These ecosystems play a key role in regulating the hydrological cycle by maintaining water availability and quality. Addressing the complex interconnections of these resources calls for integrated approaches, inclusive community participation, and strong governance to ensure long-term sustainability.
