Researchers have used rigorous impact evaluations (RIE) as an important tool for impact assessment for nearly 20 years. Rigorous evaluation approaches are also gaining ground in international organisations and development banks. But what are they exactly?

Generating positive impacts and improving living conditions as a result is the most important objective of development cooperation yet also one of its biggest challenges.

The projects involved the reforestation and sustainable management of state-owned areas of forest containing local species used for long-term timber trees. The multi-phase project supported smallholders in the regions to the east/south-east of Mount Kenya in the transition from rain-dependent farming to irrigated agriculture. In addition to increasing agricultural production, the main goal was to improve the living conditions of rural households.

This trend is also increasingly reflected in the evaluations. Almost ten years ago (2011/2012 period), 38 FC projects in fragile contexts were evaluated, a figure which has now almost doubled to 68.

In the 2019–2020 evaluation period, the only sector to contain projects receiving the entire range of possible overall ratings was the energy sector.
