Climate change and the increasing burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs)
During the COP27 climate change conference in Egypt last November, the focus was increasingly on health – and for good reason: changes in the global climate have a massive impact on people’s health. According to WHO estimates, climate change will be responsible for more than 250,000 premature deaths per year by 2030. To prevent this, not only must carbon emissions be significantly reduced, but massive investments in climate change adaptation must also be made.
Against this background, the current issue of “Development in Brief” shows how climate change is contributing to the growing burden of non-communicable diseases and what levers the healthcare systems has in place to counter them.
