Social security models protect the population from basic risks such as illness, accident, age or even a drastic loss of income. These factors can all push people into extreme poverty. However, around 4 billion people live without any kind of protection against the various risks that life can bring including old age, illness, unemployment or price shocks as well as droughts or floods that, for example, farmers are often exposed to. Those affected are threatened with a rapid decline into poverty and hunger and, at the same time, they are unable to help themselves in this situation. This is precisely where KfW Development Bank projects start: they establish social protection systems which give people the ability to help themselves out of crisis.
