Egypt

Map of Egypt

Since the revolution in January 2011, Egypt has been experiencing an eventful transition phase and still has substantial challenges to face. The security situation is stable due to the military's strong position, but isolated terrorist attacks still occur. Egypt is currently implementing a structural adjustment programme with significant support from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). This programme is intended to create the prerequisites for economic growth, fiscal consolidation and employment. President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, who has been in office since 2014, and the government also intend to use large projects to stimulate growth, including an economic zone along the Suez Canal and the construction of a new capital city.

Germany has been involved in Egypt since 1963 and has supported the country within the scope of financial cooperation since that time with loans and grants of around EUR 5.5 billion.
