On behalf of the German Government KfW Entwicklungsbank is currently financing some 300 projects in the water and sanitation sector in more than 50 countries - primarily in cities. We have committed a total of 4.7 billion euros for ongoing projects and programmes in this sector.
KfW Entwicklungsbank always agrees with the partners on a counterpart contribution. The exact amount is determined by the type of financing, the level of development of the country or the partner organisation, and the nature of the project. These counterpart contributions and the co-financings by other donors raise another three billion euros. Thus, the volume of all ongoing programmes increases to around 7.7 billion euros.
With these activities, KfW Entwicklungsbank and the local partner organisations jointly reach more than 74 million people who benefit significantly from improved water supply and sanitation, a more hygienic living environment, and clean water in rivers and lakes.
Each year new financings in a volume of 250 to 450 million euros are negotiated with the partner countries. Thereby we reach another five to ten million people every year. In doing so the activities of KfW Entwicklungsbank follow the requirements of the "water" sector strategy of the German Government of the year 2007.
