How does KfW Entwicklungsbank act in order to make potable water available for slum dwellers of big cities such as Nairobi? How do heating and transportation systems become energy efficient so that they protect the climate and the environment optimally? How might the tropical rain forest be effectively protected while at the same time people depend on living off the forests' resources? And how does a financial system have to look like in order to provide access to loans for people, who want to escape poverty, as well?

KfW Entwicklungsbank supports its partner countries in many ways by choosing a path of growth, which fosters sustainable development.

The specific planning and implementation by location and in different sectors depends on the conditions prevailing in the partner country. The guiding principle, however, is clear: all support should aim at improving the conditions of the poorest section of the world's population while having no negative impact on the climate and the environment.

In 2010 alone, KfW Entwicklungsbank - on behalf of the German Federal Government - supported projects and programmes in its partner countries with 4.5 billion euros. In the following project examples you will get an idea on how KfW Entwicklungsbank applies professional know-how and longstanding experience in development cooperation in order to achieve these goals.
