In the former socialist Yugoslavia, Macedonia was the least economically developed and poorest of the six constituent republics. Macedonia declared its independence in 1991. Unlike the other constituent republics of Yugoslavia, Macedonia's path to independence was peaceful. more

Supporting Change
The goals of the German Government in its development cooperation with Macedonia are to promote sustainable growth, support the transition process and help the country meet the EU accession criteria. By the end of 2010 the German Government had committed around 200 million euros for Financial Cooperation (FC) with Macedonia. more

Water for 400,000 People
As an EU accession candidate, Macedonia will have to meet European supply standards for municipal infrastructure in the medium term. Years of neglect and lack of maintenance have contributed to a high need for investments that greatly exceeds the capacities of the municipalities. more
