Country Information:
Cooperation Despite Tensions
Pakistan is constantly in the headlines for a number of reasons: terrorist attacks and military tension with neighbouring India over the province of Kashmir. Rising Islamic tendencies are accompanying an increase in politically and religiously motivated violence. More than 3,000 civilians were killed by terrorist attacks in 2009. Several prominent politicians were victims of assassinations, most recently the Minister for Christian minorities in the beginning of 2009. The economic situation of Pakistan has also deteriorated noticeably in recent times. Along with the worsened security situation this is due to increased political uncertainties and in particular the lack of reforms in political core areas and economic sectors, among others in energy supply. KfW Entwicklungsbank is helping to make the most of Pakistan's unused development potential. more
Priority Areas of Cooperation:
Energy, Basic Education and Health
Basic education, health and renewable energies respectively energy efficiency – to date, these have been the core areas on which German Development Cooperation (DC) has focused in Pakistan. In order to make any meaningful contributions in a country as large both geographically and in terms of population size as Pakistan, German DC has focused its efforts in all three fields on the North-West Frontier Province (NWFP), on the northern areas which are directly administered by the Pakistani Government, and on the northern part of the province of Punjab. As a general observation, despite the limited funding available, German DC enjoys very high recognition in Pakistan, as do the other donors. more
Projects and Programmes:
Improvements Needed in Family Planning
Although various health indicators have improved in recent years in Pakistan, they are still seen as being poor in comparison to other countries that are at a similar stage of development. A lot of catching up needs to be done particularly in terms of care for mothers and children. This is also one of the core areas on which German involvement is being focused in an attempt to support basic health issues in Pakistan. In the past, it has been shown that even low-level investment in reproductive health can have a noticeable effect. This KfW project is aimed specifically at improving the situation in the extremely poverty-stricken North-West Frontier Province of Pakistan. more
Environmentally Friendly Power Supply
For many people in Pakistan the power goes off on a daily basis, even in larger cities. This happens particularly often in the summer and in the evening peak load times when electricity demand increases. This has grave consequences for industry and the manufacturing industry. Either they must use expensive diesel generators to bridge these power outages or they have to complete halt production. more
